The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has been granted patent rights by the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority for four groundbreaking innovations in the fields of health and agriculture. Dr. Engineer Worku Gachena, the institute’s Director General, emphasized the importance of securing national and international patents to remain competitive globally. He also highlighted the need to leverage indigenous knowledge for problem-solving.
Ato Woldu Yemesel, the Director General of the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority, noted that AI has become a key competitive asset for nations. He praised Ethiopia’s progress in the field through the institute and assured continued support to foster innovation and transform indigenous knowledge into economic wealth.
The institute’s newly patented AI technologies include:
• AI-Enabled Diabetes Mellitus Detection System,
• AI-Enabled Breast Abnormality Detection System,
• Multi-Input Model for the Classification of Skin Lesions,
• Coffee Disease Detection System using HSV segmentation and AI
These patents mark a significant step forward in Ethiopia’s technological and innovative capabilities.
