The digital world is ever-evolving, as evidenced by the substantial boom in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI (Gen AI). But how does this transformation benefit the world?
Senior customer engineer for Google’s public sector in Latin America, Carlos Andres Neva Vargas, emphasised the necessity for people to adapt to the rapid pace of global change.
With AI poised to potentially reshape the working world, the economy, and transform how governments interact with citizens, Neva Vargas highlighted the importance of readiness and adaptation in navigating these transformative shifts.
Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce for T&T (Amcham T&T Tech Hub Islands Summit at the Hyatt Regency (Trinidad), Port of Spain, Vargas shared that according to the International Data Corporation in 2023, it predicted that Gen AI solutions are expected to double in 2024 and grow to US$151.1 billion in 2027 while global economic value is valued between US$2.6 and US$4.4 trillion.
“But what happens is that we understand the powers that this has, what we can do with and we have some idea about it, but there some things that we haven’t discovered yet, but we understand that it is going to create a huge impact. The thing is, we’re not really convinced, there’s a lot of fear and thinking about the possible risks,” Vargas said.
Vargas said this is evident as only 22% of public sector leaders globally believe in the ability of Gen AI to better serve the public.
“Public sector particularly, they are not sure of what we can use Gen AI for or that we can do it safely. I would say risk is probably the biggest challenge in that regard,” he said.
He said the public sector’s responsibility is to protect the public interest which is complex, but in terms of implementing AI, it should be used in the education, environmental, health, transportation, safety and housing sectors.
“Our mission is to advance society, even private sector entities like Google, to make sure that our children have a planet to live on,” Vargas said.
