AI-driven renewable energy grids are transforming Africa’s energy landscape by optimizing energy distribution, forecasting demand, and balancing power from renewable sources like solar and wind. These grids leverage AI to monitor systems, predict failures, and enhance maintenance.
Several African initiatives are leading this shift. In South Africa, Eskom is integrating AI to pinpoint unregistered solar panels, while Kenya’s M-KOPA Solar uses AI to for the deployment and management of solar home systems in rural areas. Atlas AI, in partnership with Engie Energy Access, uses machine learning to map energy poverty and prioritize areas for energy infrastructure investments in Kenya.
While challenges such as limited data and digital infrastructure remain, AI-powered grids offer a transformative solution. By improving energy management and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Africa is advancing towards energy independence and emerging as a pioneer in sustainable, AI-driven energy solutions.
