Google has announced a substantial investment of $5.8m aimed at AI and cyber security skills development across Sub-Saharan Africa. This funding will benefit various organizations, including the Data Scientists Network Foundation in Nigeria, Nelson Mandela University, and several other South African universities, as well as Young Scientists Kenya.

The initiative aims to provide foundational training in AI and cyber security, educate teenagers on the safe and ethical AI usage, and support nonprofit leaders and public sector officials in building AI capabilities to develop and implement AI solutions. This latest commitment expands on Google’s previous $20m pledge to organizations dedicated to advancing digital skills in Africa.

According to a recent study titled “The Digital Opportunity of Sub-Saharan Africa,” AI has the potential to contribute $30 billion to the region’s economies by 2030. These strategic investments from tech giants highlight Africa’s growing potential to become a key player in AI innovation and application.
