AI-based weather and climate forecasting is evolving rapidly, predicting global weather patterns with remarkable speed and precision and accomplishing tasks, such as modeling hurricane development, in minutes that rather took hours.
Scientists at Google Research, Google DeepMind, MIT, Harvard University, and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts have developed a new model called NeuralGCM.
It is trained on decades of past weather data using a neural network, machine learning, and traditional physics equations. The advanced model delivers 10-day weather forecasts with exceptional accuracy in under a minute. It can also produce precise short-term forecasts up to three days ahead.
The new model has proven to be more accurate for one- to 10-day weather forecasts than existing models as well as other solely machine learning-based models. It also excels at predicting climate conditions over several decades.
Predicting extreme temperatures is becoming increasingly important in our warming world. AI models will be indispensable in helping the world to exercise caution.
