In late 2023, the BRICS group, with Ethiopia as a new member, declared the establishment of an ‘AI Study Group’ to drive innovation and cooperation among its member countries. This initiative can be viewed as a strategic move to strengthen and expedite AI development within the bloc. The study group functions under the BRICS Institute of Future Networks (BIFN), which was established to foster technological partnerships among these countries.
The creation of the study group formalized and strengthened collaboration among BRICS countries in AI, offering a structured platform for member states to exchange knowledge and resources. The group’s emphasis on critical areas such as AI governance and technological cooperation aided in aligning national AI strategies with collective goals, resulting in more coordinated and effective efforts.
By pooling resources and efforts, the BRICS nations, including Ethiopia, aim to increase their influence in the global AI arena. This collective strategy could amplify their capacity to influence international AI standards and policies, potentially attracting investment and fostering innovation within the bloc, further accelerating AI development.
Currently, the group is still in its early stages, focusing on expanding AI cooperation, facilitating information exchange, and developing a unified approach to AI governance. It is anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping AI policies within the BRICS framework.
