Global leaders have endorsed a Pact for the Future, which outlines a vision for addressing global challenges, particularly focusing on digital cooperation and AI governance. This initiative follows the UN Advisory Body’s proposal for governing AI for humanity. The Global Digital Compact, a major annex to the Pact, establishes the first comprehensive global framework for digital cooperation and AI governance. It includes commitments to ensure that technology, including AI, is designed and regulated for the benefit of all people, anchored in human rights and international law.

Notably, the pact introduces a roadmap for AI governance, incorporating the formation of an International Scientific Panel and a Global Policy Dialogue on AI. The focus is on responsibly harnessing AI while ensuring digital technologies help bridge the digital divide and are globally accessible. The Pact represents the first global commitment advocating for open-source data, models, and standards, alongside enhanced data governance, placing it on the UN agenda and requiring countries to take concrete actions by 2030.
